Aromatherapy for Sleep Disorders? Top Essential Oils of 2024

Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils to promote relaxation and lower stress. This in turn can improve sleep quality! While they are not a direct treatment for snoring or sleep apnea, essential oils can help with managing the symptoms of these conditions. Research has even shown that aromatherapy not only improves sleep quality, but also reduces stress, pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue in adults and elderly people.

Here’s how essential oils may help individuals who snore or have sleep apnea:

  1. Relaxation: Certain essential oils (such as lavender, chamomile, and bergamot) have calming properties. By helping to relax the body and mind, these oils can decrease snoring and improve sleep quality.
  2. Clearing Airways: Some essential oils, like eucalyptus and peppermint, have decongestant properties. This may be beneficial for sleep apnea, as congestion or blockages in the airways can contribute to breathing difficulties during sleep.
  3. Reducing Inflammation: Some essential oils, such as frankincense and tea tree oil, may help reduce inflammation in the throat and nasal passages. This could potentially ease symptoms caused by inflamed tissues.
  4. Improving Sleep Quality: Essential oils may help people achieve deeper and more restful sleep. This can lead to fewer interruptions in breathing and less snoring episodes.

Disclaimer: It’s important to note that while essential oils can be beneficial, they may not work for everyone. Individual responses may vary.

Additionally, individuals must exercise caution, as sensitivities or allergies to certain oils may occur. Always consult with your healthcare provider before adding essential oils to your sleep routine. This is even more important if you are on medications or have underlying health conditions.

How Do I Use Essential Oils?

The easiest way to use essential oils is in a diffuser. You just place the oil of your choice in the diffuser and it will disperse tiny particles of the oil into the air. Use it next to your bed at night time for best results.

It can also be used in combination with other therapies, such as anti-snoring mouthguards or nasal strips.

Other common methods to use essential oils include:

 Shower:

• Mix 3-5 drops in carrier oil and put it on your towel. Start with your legs and rub your heart upwards

• Add five drops of oil or mix to the shower floor (away from the shower stream) and inhale the steam

 Bathtub:

• Add your essential oil or mix to a teaspoon of Epsom salt, milk powder, or your preferred carrier, then swish in the bath. Inhale deeply as you bathe

Face Steaming

Place boiled water into a heat-resistant container and add 2-4 drops of the essential oil.

Lean over the bowl, but be sure to keep about 12 inches of space between your face and the water.

Inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes. If you begin to feel side effects, such as coughing, dizziness, or nausea, stop immediately.

Gargling

Make sure your essential oil is safe to be taken internally in case of accidental swallowing.

Ingredients:

• A cup of warm water

• Half a teaspoon of salt

• 2 drops of thyme essential oil

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients.

2. Gargle mix for a minute

3. Spit.

 Massage

Add essential oil to carrier oils, then massage it onto your skin before bedtime. You can also get roll-on essential oils to make application easier (see examples in our list below).

Amazon Review: “I’m so very pleased with the quality of these oils. Some of the reviews had me a little scared and hesitant. Especially because the price tag was almost $30 so that’s kind of a lot to pay for oils that I may not like. (They were on a small sale so I decided to buy them). In the past I have bought oils that claimed to be essential or with a little touch of fragrance and it just smelled like a chemical factory. Which to me is overwhelmingly yuck and never appreciated! I’m so glad to say that this is NOT the case with these. They smell amazing while also seeming to be pretty natural. They literally made the perfect blend of the oils that they used. Thank you ????”

Amazon Review:I wish they sold 8oz or 16oz bottles so that they could last even longer. It smells great! It’s easy to recycle once you’re done with them. I especially recommend this to those who plan to use it for aromatherapy at home and such since it’s the only one ingredient so it’s safe to use.”
